The short answer

International doctors reach GMC registration through one of several evidence routes: the PLAB examinations, an acceptable postgraduate qualification, a GMC-approved sponsorship scheme, or a relevant European qualification. All routes also require evidence of English language ability, identity, and fitness to practise.

The main routes

How doctors reach GMC registration

Relevant European qualificationHolders of qualifications with specific recognition rightsRules changed after EU exit — check current status

English language evidence

  • IELTS Academic or OET at the GMC's required scores
  • Some doctors qualify through a primary medical qualification taught and examined in English
  • Recent practice in an accepted English-speaking country can be used in defined circumstances

Specialist and GP registration

Registration with a licence to practise lets you work as a doctor in the UK, but entry to the specialist or GP register is a separate application, most often through the Certificate of Eligibility route for doctors trained outside UK training programmes.

Order of operations

  • Confirm your route before booking any exam
  • Get your primary medical qualification verified early — verification is often the longest step
  • Line up English language evidence that is still valid at the point of application
  • Secure a sponsoring employer for the visa once your registration route is clear
